Chapter Thirty

Okay. He’d had about enough. “Do not start with me, Rafael,” Cam snarled. “I’m not here for your bullshit.”

Alex must have overheard. He was glaring at them over his shoulder.

“My friend, more opportunities to torment you is why I even agreed to come to Bendover, so there’s about this much possibility I’m going to relent.” Rafe held up his big hand and spread his thumb and beefy pointer finger a half inch apart.

Parker came through the conference room door and walked straight to them. He’d been gone for less than ninety seconds after excusing himself to take a call.

Squabbling earned them a low snarl from their legal eagle. “Now would not be the time to get under Alex’s skin. Best behavior, boys. Or suffer the consequences.”

The guy was right. Cam glanced at Rafe. His expression had changed. Grave seriousness replaced the snarky playfulness of a minute ago.

Herding them back to the group of men huddled at the front of the room, Parker adroitly insinuated all three of them back into the conversation.

“Is it safe to assume you won’t need much time to decide?”

The man asking the question looked like a Hollywood casting director’s dream for the role of an idealized military type.

Marine Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Grahame looked the part. His uniform was tailored for a perfect fit. The rows of ribbons and medals made one hell of an impression. He stood ramrod straight, shoulders squared. In short, a veritable badass was in their midst.

Alex, arms crossed, looked at his team. In addition to Cam, Rafe, and Parker, there was Jace, Drae, Brody, Ben, and Duke.

The topic under serious discussion concerned the creation of rapid response teams, or RRTs, capable of dropping into a crisis or hotspot at a moment’s notice. Initially, these teams were to be based domestically, but as with all matters coming out of the Pentagon, military, or security apparatus, things were intentionally murky regarding foreign situations.

Cam had zero doubt in his mind that Alex would turn down the exclusive contract that would gold-plate the agency’s prominence and prestige. Having a place at the table, being in the room, as the saying goes, mattered to Justice.

He felt Alex’s discerning gaze and met the man’s direct stare. Nodding once to confirm his agreement, he watched as the same nonverbal communication took place with Drae.

The lieutenant colonel’s face suddenly split into a wide grin. He put his hand out for Alex to shake.

“You’re making a great decision, Major. Welcome to my team, gentlemen,” he barked enthusiastically.

Duke was generally a man of few words. Same for Ben but both men held a fast, confidential sidebar that ended with their security chief asking a blunt and very interesting question.

“Lieutenant Colonel Grahame,” Duke said, his voice ringing with command. “Will we get a wish list?”

The starchy Marine officer chuckled. “Fellas,” he drawled, “you’re gonna get carte blanche. Whatever you want, whatever it takes. The folks in the eight-sided building, the black box, and the fancy house on Pennsylvania Avenue want this, and they want it bad.
